Technical best practices for filling narrow joints in concrete pavements
Properly sealed joints keep out incompressibles, limit moisture intrusion and preserve ride quality. As narrow joint filling becomes more common, the right procedures and materials make the difference between a quality installation and a failed one. The challenge of narrow joints
Narrow joints eliminate the traditional reservoir cut, which changes how sealant penetrates and how you must prepare the joint. Hot pour sealant cannot be installed successfully in a 1/8-inch sawn joint. Lab testing with an ASTM D6690 Type II sealant showed penetration of roughly 1/2 inch in a 1/8-inch joint, versus at least 2 inches in a 3/16-inch opening. A field core confirmed the same limited result.
Baseline recommendations for new construction:
· Use a minimum blade width of 5/32 inch for contraction joints unless a second widening cut is performed.
· Confirm the final joint opening is at least 3/16 inch after shrinkage. Estimating joint opening widths is straightforward using the ACPA Joint and Sealant Movement Estimator.
· Specify an ASTM D6690 Type IV sealant for better penetration without exceeding recommended installation temperatures. Its lower modulus also conforms to the surface if extruded upward in summer. Note: As technology improves, other products may become available for this style of joint filling, but ASTM D6690 Type IV sealant is the only product that was evaluated in the featured tech brief.
· Flush fill the sealant with the pavement surface. This can last twice as long as a recessed installation.
· Achieve a minimum penetration depth of 2 inches.
Guidelines assume a 15-foot joint spacing; spacings over 20 feet may require further analysis.

Key technical best practices
· Joint cleaning: Clean and dry joints are critical to formed-in-place sealant performance. Cleaning costs little but has a major impact on results, so it should never be skipped.
· Media blasting: Media blast the top 2 inches of the joint walls, then air blast. A single pass with an alignment fixture works well for narrow joints.
· Quality control: Use the ACPA Joint Reservoir Quality Control Wipe test to verify cleanliness. Only the top 2 inches of the joint wall matter for bonding.
· Material installation: Special wand tips reach into the joint to fill the top 2 inches, and two passes may be needed. The small material volume demands careful control to avoid surface excess.
