How Florida is advancing roadway safety with new pavement grooving trials

Florida is taking a proactive approach to roadway infrastructure by implementing new asphalt grooving trial sections. This innovative technique aims to mitigate hydroplaning risks, increase pavement durability and provide a safer driving experience.
The state is actively seeking alternatives to Open Graded Asphalt Friction Course (OGFC) due to long-term durability concerns. Safety grooving presents an optimal choice that addresses these issues while remaining highly cost-effective.
Project details include:
Scale: 15,000 square yards (approximately two lane miles).
Cost efficiency: Completed at an affordable $4.00 per square yard.
Partnership: Executed by member contractor DOT Diamond Core Drilling in partnership with Ajax Paving Company.

As testing and long-term durability monitoring continue, the goal is to establish safety grooving as the standard alternative to OGFC surfaces. This transition will help transportation agencies improve safety, reduce maintenance costs and extend the lifespan of regional roadways.
