Evaluation of Minor Improvements - Grooved Pavement (Supplemental Report)

The California Department of Transportation prepared this report to check the validity of the findings of an earlier report. A "before and after" technique was used to evaluate 322 land-miles of grooved portland cement concrete pavement on state freeways in Los Angeles. Diamond grooving produced an average 69% reduction in wet pavement accident rates on the 23 projects studied.

Evaluation of Noise Mitigation Alternatives for Route 85

A noise study was conducted to determine if the noise generated by the interaction of tires and pavement surface would be lower for a PCC surface that used diamond grinding as opposed to a surface that had longitudinal diamond grooving similar to Route 85 in California.

Experimental Project: Enhanced Drainage by Use of Pavement Grooving - I-295 North, Rhode Island

This experimental project is to evaluate the effectiveness of diamond grooving on drainage of water from the pavement surface under traffic and to assess the impact of diamond grooving with pavement noise. The measured noise level was actually lower after grooving, but without a more rigorous and detailed experimental setup to reduce variables, it should be stated conservatively that the process had minimal impact on the tire noise.

FAQs Regarding Concrete Sawing Slurry

What is concrete slurry? Concrete saw slurry is an inert mixture of water and hardened concrete fines also known as concrete grinding residue (CGR), which is the resulting concrete residue generated during sawing and diamond grinding operations.
